One taps on wood. Another blows a tone. Someone beats a rhythm on a drum. What starts as separate sounds slowly comes together. Some objects even let you whistle your own melody! The friends feel joyful, and sometimes a little sad. Together—with each other and with the waves—they create the most beautiful music. But the most magical moment is when they play together on bamboo sticks, as if they are one instrument. That is how they kindle the fire of their friendship, keeping it warm forever.

Djumbala! is the new production by Oorkaan, in collaboration with composer and percussionist Vernon Chatlein. Rooted in the Afro‑Curaçaoan tradition, Vernon bases his new compositions on muzik di zumbi and tambu, characterised by instruments made from natural materials, vocal rhythms and sound imitation. Angelo Ursini adds, alongside the flute, a range of other unique wind instruments. Together with percussionist Lidrick Solognier, they create a warm and expressive musical world.
