Bake Sale at Benee
What is the recipe for an inclusive city? Which communities keep Tilburg going and make our city richer? And what does it feel like to grow up in a city you call home, but that doesn’t always feel like home?
During the Week of Democracy, T*Agency joins forces with Dane Cheng a June and WeSpeak to explore the ingredients of an inclusive city. Which communities, stories and experiences give Tilburg its colour and depth? And what does it take to make sure everyone can feel at home here?
For years, WeSpeak has been committed to representing young people in the neighbourhood. They give a megaphone to voices that are still too often unheard in the city. During this Saturday afternoon, they add a deeper layer to the programme, exploring together with the audience: what is the recipe for an inclusive city?
We invite Saber Aidarus, known as SaberOH!, to talk about growing up in a multicultural society. Together, we’ll explore questions such as: what ingredient should never be missing from a multicultural city? And: which rotten apple should we take out of our recipe?
Like it or not, the presence of diverse communities in the Netherlands is largely the result of colonialism and migration. Despite this often complex history, these communities have shown their resilience and found their own place within Dutch society. One of the places where this cultural exchange is particularly visible is in the kitchen.
During THE BAKE SALE, we put this diversity in the spotlight through the simplest and most accessible medium: food. Food creates a space to taste, appreciate and connect with one another.
In collaboration with Thelma’s and bakery Afrah, we’ll serve €1 bites inspired by the Surinamese and Moroccan kitchens. The focus is on tasting and talking. How did these flavours find their way here? What stories lie behind them? And how have different communities contributed to the city that Tilburg is today?
This performance has no interval.
