Intimate Letters
Between 1919 and 1928, composer Leoš Janáček wrote nearly seven hundred love letters to Kamila Stôslová. She was nearly forty years younger than him, and their love remained platonic. Nonetheless, Kamila became his greatest source of inspiration.
The music is raw, direct, and passionate. As if Janáček wrote his feelings directly into notes. The result is one of the most personal and moving string quartets of the twentieth century: Intimate Letters.
Amsterdam Sinfonietta places this personal masterpiece in a programme where expression and imagination are central. The string orchestra is known for its intense ensemble play and direct way of musical expression, as if the musicians form one instrument. This is precisely how the emotional weight of Intimate Letters truly comes to life.
The ensemble is among the leading string orchestras in Europe and performs worldwide in major concert halls. With adventurous programs, Amsterdam Sinfonietta connects classical repertoire with new music.
This performance has an interval.
