Ambitiously, Mickey Vermeer (28) moved from the small village of Berkel-Enschot to the big city of Amsterdam as a budding musical actress. “All the rehearsals were in the Amsterdam area. I was young, my work was there, so it made sense to relocate.” She performed in the musical productions Evita (2018), Aïda in Concert (2019), and Kinky Boots (2019). Now she is back in her old, familiar village and shines with her first real leading role as Dorothy in the family musical The Wiz.
“I have already held many diverse positions in musical productions. I have been part of an ensemble, a group that plays together within a production. I have also played in a swing role, where you are able to step in for different roles. Additionally, I have covered for different roles when the lead actor was absent, also known as the understudy. In those moments, the itch started: Oh, I aspire that too. As a lead character, you tell the story and have much more connection with the audience.”

“For The Wiz, singer and musical actor Darren van der Lek forwarded me the audition call, as he thought the role of Dorothy suited me. We had previously worked together in the productions Aïda in Concert and in Aladdin. During Aladdin, I had the role of a fortune teller in the ensemble, and he played the parrot Iago. From the beginning, he said, ‘I don’t understand why you don’t have the role of Jasmine. You sing so beautifully and you have such a lovely & open presence.'
“When Darren sent me a message about the auditions for The Wiz, I happened to be in Canada with my boyfriend. I really wanted to audition, but I couldn’t just suddenly return to the Netherlands. Van Hoorne Studios then adjusted their schedule, allowing me to audition live on the last day. After the audition, I received a phone call that same evening with the good news that I could come back the next day for the final rounds, and that’s when I got the role. It all happened so quickly.”
“Due to a tornado, Dorothy ends up in a kind of fantasy world, the Wonderful Land of Oz. There, she encounters various characters who later become her friends: The Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. Together they set off, each with a wish: Dorothy wants desperately to go home, the Scarecrow wants brains, the Tin Man wants a heart, and the Cowardly Lion wants to be brave.”
“All these elements Dorothy is actually seeking within herself. Her friends teach her during the journey home that everything you need to believe in yourself is already inside you. You just have to discover it. It’s about finding your way to yourself as well as finding your way home.”

“Home can connect you to literally a house where you live, sleep, and eat. But as a person, you can also move. In the end, you feel at home when you are yourself and when you stand behind yourself. I feel at home when I’m with my boyfriend or when I’m with my parents. It just feels familiar.”
“When I moved to Amsterdam for the musical Evita, I moved in with my sister Teddy. She was living and studying there at the Lucia Marthas Academy. I moved in with her and later we found an apartment together. I always get along very well with my sister. We prepared for auditions together and I could talk to her about everything. That gave a feeling of home in Amsterdam.”
“During Corona, I moved back to Brabant. There was a pandemic going on and it was difficult to find work in my sector. Moreover, you have production houses everywhere now. I thought: If I have a car and can move around, I can live anywhere I want. I saved up a bit of money and eventually bought my first little car.”
“Also, my boyfriend returned from his studies abroad. We both studied in Tilburg. During Corona, I wanted to be close to home and my family. Together we bought a house and we have since been back in Berkel-Enschot for three years.”
