Some actors from Het Zuidelijk Toneel have known each other for years, while others only met in 2023 during the performance Mission Molière. That collaboration proved so strong that director and artistic leader Sarah Moeremans decided to ask them to continue as a permanent ensemble. On October 30 & 31, they will share the stage for the first time as a group of six with Not Quichot.
It fits & it clicks
The fact that everyone already knows each other contributes to the success of Het Zuidelijk Toneel. Actress Keja Klaasje Kwestro shares: “Everyone plays very differently and brings something different to the table. Everyone is eager to act, is well-prepared, and wants to create a great performance. Since we know each other, we can get to acting much faster.”
Sarah adds: “This group has already navigated through quite a bit together. This is a combination of people I have been working with for over twenty years. All the members of the ensemble have been involved in choosing the other members.”

Our collective story
Sarah Moeremans' sources of inspiration for the stories that Het Zuidelijk Toneel tells are diverse. From the German director René Pollesch to her five-year-old daughter Charlie Maria. “Pollesch created theater that I didn't think was possible. His work is full of thoughts and reasoning that shouldn't be tested against reality. The way my daughter approaches others without fear or prejudice also makes me think. Why do we do things the way we do?
After forming the ensemble, we searched for our collective story. Our conclusion: we are theater makers with a love for the craft and the ambition to develop that skill.”
“It is an exceptional interaction,” ensemble member Julia Ghysels explains. “Despite our differences, everyone stands in their strength. There is a lot of trust, and you can feel that when you're together.”

Sarah Moeremans' production Not Quichot is a nod to the story of Don Quichot, the foolish knight with good intentions. The story is told by six friends who commemorate their good friend Q. But who was Q? What is real and what is fiction?
“Think of it like a kaleidoscope that you used to look through as a child. All the storylines intertwine. Afterwards, you think, ‘huh?’ what is actually true?” actor Joep van der Geest explains. At the same time, you travel through whole and half Europe, through mountains, forests, past farmer protests and burning libraries. “So it really is a trip of a trip,” Joep shares.

Grand
Keja Klaasje Kwestro, ensemble member, continues: “The performance is one big amplification. It’s not realistic, but recognizable. Accessible, yet very philosophical. Our playing style is very much in the here and now. You’re not watching a film in a cinema; you feel seen as the audience.”
Julia explains: “So expect a whirlwind. An adrenaline shot where hopefully you forget everything for a while.” Join Q’s friends on this psychedelic storytelling trip and discover it for yourself!
Keja Klaasje Kwestro, the Nameless Roadside Restaurant Owner
“In Not Quichot, I represent all roadside restaurant owners in the world. That includes all restaurants, waitstaff, owners, and so on. I am very physical, sensitive, and straightforward. I do not hold back. I always bring something of myself to the stage, but it’s a much more extreme version.”

Julia Ghysels, A
“A is an amplification of myself. She is very thoughtful, rational, distant, and searching for truth. I am also looking for support and truth, but I am a bit bolder and freer in that pursuit. If you only have control, you limit yourself. Sometimes you need to take a detour.”

Joep van der Geest, X
“X is a great mystery. He loves books. Especially fiction and page-turners, those are books that are so exciting you can’t stop reading. X and I are quite similar. I try not to become someone else and don’t force myself into a mold. That makes acting richer and freer. When you let go of the idea that you have to meet certain expectations, everything suddenly becomes possible.”
