Femicide: Facts and Myths

Every eight days, a woman is murdered in the Netherlands. In just over half of these cases (52%), the perpetrator is a (former) partner. How can femicide be explained? And, more importantly: how can it be prevented?

During this XL edition of the Science Café Tilburg, experts share the latest scientific insights into femicide. Guest speaker Marieke Liem, Professor of Security and Interventions at Leiden University, coordinates the Femicide Monitor with her colleagues. Drawing on the facts of the past twelve years, she debunks the most common myths surrounding the murder of women. Who are the main perpetrators, and who are the victims? Which forms can be distinguished? How can this phenomenon be further interpreted? And finally: what are the red flags — and the blind spots?

In addition, experts from Filomena (Hart van Brabant region) and the Expertise Centre for Domestic Violence and Child Abuse will also be present. They will explain how they operate and how they provide support to people experiencing violence from a partner, family member or other close relation. How do the various organisations in the region work together to prevent femicide and other forms of relational violence?

The programme will be accompanied by a suitably themed musical contribution from our resident cabaret artist Lodewijk “Wiwa” Lenaerts and Maurice Mulderij.
