On stage are Schneemann & Friends, an international ensemble of top musicians with roots in classical music, jazz and folk traditions from around the world, together with Greek singer Vasilis Lekkas, one of the foremost interpreters of the repertoire of Mikis Theodorakis.

Behind them, you see a life-sized film projection of a taverna in Piraeus, the place where Theodorakis himself liked to go. The musicians on stage perform live together with the musicians who happen to drop by in the taverna on screen – as if the wall between then and now, between here and there, briefly disappears. From time to time, the projection zooms in on historical, iconic film fragments of Mikis Theodorakis: Mikis as singer, conductor, composer and philosopher.

You hear a rich sound in which Greek tradition and music come together. A local choir also joins in. This gives each evening its own character and makes the connection with the city tangible, including here in Tilburg.

Tribute to Theodorakis is a personal project by Bart and Julian Schneemann, father and son, who have brought together their love for Greece and its music in this concert. They have gathered a special group of like-minded musicians from all over the world, playing instruments that together create a rich, new sound world – from the Turkish ney and the Italian organetto to the Greek bouzouki.

Afterwards, the evening continues in the foyer with a relaxed after-concert, as if you remain seated in that taverna just a little longer.
