Guido Belcanto

Paviljoen der Menselijke Driften

Verkoop v.a. 23 May 12:00 uur
On a hot summer’s day, Guido Belcanto drove his silver Cadillac to the Cinquantenaire Park in Brussels. In the stone bodies of the relief De Menselijke Driften by Jef Lambeaux, he recognised something: himself. The street musician who went from café to café with songs by Zangeres Zonder Naam and who later sang about his own desires without shame.

He took a pen and a guitar and wrote: ‘Life is a true horror. We are all in the same boat: everyone, poor or rich, we carry on.’ But until that moment comes, Guido wants to be the emperor of the chanson. Consoling and unflappable, making everything alright.

Soon the silver Cadillac will once again glide across the Belgian and Dutch roads. In the boot lies a new record, Het Paviljoen der Menselijke Driften, but also old hits, a few murder ballads and his versions of songs by Loudon Wainwright III, David McWilliams and Zangeres Zonder Naam (Guido was granted access to the original recordings by the family of her discoverer Johnny Hoes).

There is no concept for the show. Or perhaps there is. The concept is Guido. So expect the unexpected. But also a veteran who still has it. Someone who sings with a sweet, familiar voice, shaped by nights, desires and a love that does not fade.

Whether this performance has an interval is not yet known.
